The Frenchie Calm Guide: Fireworks, Car Rides, Vet Visits and Shaking

Some Frenchies sleep through anything. Others shake at the first firework, pant the whole car ride and hide when the vet's name comes up. If yours is the second kind, this guide is for you.

Why stress matters more for Frenchies

A stressed dog breathes faster and harder. For most dogs that's fine. For a Frenchie with a narrow airway, heavy stress-panting can make breathing a real struggle, especially on a warm night. Helping your Frenchie stay calm also protects their breathing (see the Frenchie breathing guide).

Read the stress signals

Early signs: lip licking, yawning when not tired, turning the head away, ears pinned back, whale eye (white of the eye showing).

Bigger signs: shaking, heavy panting, pacing, drooling, hiding, clinging to you, trying to escape.

The earlier you notice, the easier it is to help.

Not every shake is stress

Shaking can also mean cold, pain, nausea or illness. If your Frenchie is shaking with no obvious trigger, is also wobbly, vomiting or not eating, or yelps when touched, call your vet.

Fireworks-night checklist

The week before - ☐ Set up a den: a covered crate or small quiet room with their bed and a worn T-shirt of yours - ☐ Play firework sounds very quietly during meals, slowly a little louder each day - ☐ Make sure the ID tag and microchip details are current (scared dogs bolt)

The day of - ☐ Long walk early, before dark - ☐ Dinner a little earlier than usual - ☐ Close windows and curtains, turn on a fan, white noise or the TV - ☐ Keep the room cool, since panting builds heat - ☐ Give a long-lasting chew or a frozen stuffed toy in the den - ☐ Stay home if you can; calmly comfort your Frenchie if they come to you

Never take a scared Frenchie to watch fireworks, or leave them outside or in a car.

Calming support for the big days

On fireworks nights, long trips and vet visits, I also use HolistaPet CBD Calming Chews. They combine broad-spectrum hemp CBD (no THC, so no "high") with organic chamomile, L-tryptophan and choline to help maintain calm during stressful moments.

Some dogs get a little sleepy. If your Frenchie takes any medication, ask your vet before starting.
